Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) 3ml
Lumigan / Latisse: the only proven way to grow long and beautiful eyelashes.
Lumigan, commonly known as Latisse, contains bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%. Both Lumigan and Latisse are manufactured by Allergen and are identical medications. Lumigan is marketed toward treating glaucoma patients (because bimatoprost reduces elevated intraocular pressure IOP), and Latisse is marketed toward eyelash growth. However, both Lumigan and Latisse are FDA approved, and have been clinically proven to grow, thicken, and darken eyelashes over time. Scientists believe that this additional growth occurs by lengthening the anagen phase of hair growth and increasing the number of hairs during this phase.
How to apply Lumigan for eyelash growth:
Lumigan is applied once a day to the base of the upper eyelid until the desired length is achieved (usually after approximately 12-16 weeks, with initial results appearing after 8 weeks). After the desired length is achieved, the new lash length is maintained by applying Lumigan only once a week. This treatment needs to be maintained because once it is stopped, the eyelashes will resume their original growth patterns.
Please note: Lumigan and Latisse can increase the brown pigment in the iris over long periods of time, and this change may be permanent.
Additional information from the manufacturer:
How does Lumigan / Latisse work?
Bimatoprost is a prostamide, a synthetic structural analog of prostaglandin with ocular hypotensive activity. It selectively mimics the effects of naturally occurring substances, prostamides. Bimatoprost is believed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in humans by increasing outflow of aqueous humor through both the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral routes. Elevated IOP presents a major risk factor for glaucomatous field loss. The higher the level of IOP, the greater the likelihood of optic nerve damage and visual field loss.
Indications and usage
Lumigan ophthalmic solution is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who are intolerant of other intraocular pressure lowering medications or insufficiently responsive (failed to achieve target IOP determined after multiple measurements over time) to another intraocular pressure lowering medication. Lumigan also increases the length, thickness, and/or number of eyelashes.
Adverse reactions
ocular dryness
visual disturbance
ocular burning
foreign body sensation
eye pain
ocular irritation
eyelash darkening
eye discharge
tearing
photophobia
allergic conjunctivitis
increases in iris pigmentation
conjunctival edema
Precautions
Lumigan ophthalmic solution has been reported to cause changes to pigmented tissues. These reports increased pigmentation and growth of eyelashes and increased pigmentation of the iris and periorbital tissue (eyelid). These changes may be permanent.
Lumigan may gradually change eye color, increasing the amount of brown pigment in the iris by increasing the number of melanosomes (pigment granules) in melanocytes. The long-term effects on the melanocytes and the consequences of potential injury to the melanocytes and /or deposition of pigment granules to other areas of the eye are currently unknown. The change in iris color occurs slowly and may not be noticeable for several months to years. Patients should be informed of the possibility of iris color change.
Eyelid skin darkening has also been reported in association with the use of Lumigan.
Lumigan may gradually change eyelashes; these changes include increased length, thickness, pigmentation, and number of lashes.
Patients who are expected to receive treatment in only one eye should be informed about the potential for increased brown pigmentation of the iris, periorbital tissue, and eyelashes in the treated eye and thus, heterochromia between the eyes. They should also be advised of the potential for a disparity between the eyes in length, thickness, and/or number of eyelashes.
Please note: For more information about any other possible risks, please consult your doctor or pharmacist and read the information provided with Lumigan.
